The Appeal of Authenticity

Marine Mammal Pavilion
National Aquarium in
Baltimore, MD

We believe that visitors become more fully engaged in an exhibit when they are given authentic roles to play. In a presidential library museum, this could mean listening closely to candidates as a member of the electorate; in an exhibit on the physics of space travel, it could mean playing the role of a scientist by conducting simple action-reaction experiments. Whatever the role, it is critical that visitors have a clear understanding of what is expected of them and be given all the tools they need to succeed.

A real whale named Scylla was the model for the life-sized replica shown above and appears in several of the pavilion's popular hands-on activities.
